For a Legend team that's used to running at least two, if not three times a weekend, the Memorial Day holiday proved to be pretty quiet. Only one race was on the card for us this week as we chose to pass on the pavement of Hawkeye Downs and then only had the race on Sunday at Wisconsin's 141 Speedway.
The Legends were fourth on the card, with all of the IRA properties running ahead of us. Justin, Dad, Faith and Eric were the crew for the day. About 16 Legends were signed in.
In the heat, Eric was in a battle for the lead early, with rookie Adam Zellmer in the top spot. The two went nose to tail for the last several laps, when on the white flag lap Payton Jones got around Eric for third. Jones then nipped Zellmer at the line. We were proud to see Adam do so well, as he's part of a team we often partner with and he was running an engine recently purchased from EBR.
THE FEATURE
In the A-Main the Legends continued to put on the side by side action fans have come to expect. At the drop of the green it didn't take long for some three-wide racing to ensue with the veterans, Parker Jones and Eric making a sandwich out of A. Zellmer.
The next couple of laps the 6E and Ryan Sullivan were side by side chasing Austin Winkle who had the point. A yellow came out and on the restart, Winkle maintained the lead with Eric and Sullivan in tow.
About 8 laps in, Eric took the lead over Winkle, but two laps later, Parker snuck under him, going into turn-three for first place. From here the 6E was always within striking distance anywhere from a full 5 lengths to a bumper's width away.
Coming down the backstretch on the white flag lap, Eric got under Jones and the two locked bumpers. On the debrief between the pair, Parker said knew Eric was on him as he felt the Jones Motorsports #41 bog down going into the third turn. For Eric's part he was just along for the ride, as he would turn his wheel without response.
When Parker went into the corner, the 6E fell off the 41. Eric gathered it up and peddled Daisy hard and low in the last corner and got under Parker. Parker's strength vs. the 6E was the straightaway the entire race and he powered on for the win. Eric was at his rear wheel when they took the checkers.
It was at least the second "Pro" class victory for Eric this year, as Parker is designated a "Semi-Pro," for purposes of national INEX standing.
NOTES
We had a lot of people watching on FloRacing and are very grateful for the coverage announcer Ray Underwood gave our friend and sponsor Owen Leatherberry on the simulcast.
After the races we were pleasantly surprised to have Mike and Staci Hughes along with Melissa Dahlke pay us a visit. We also thank Faith's parents and grandparents for staying for the whole show as it was very windy and only in the low 60's.
